Becoming an underwater photographer is an exciting journey. Here are some recommendations for aspiring underwater photographers:

1. Learn to Dive (Open Water)

Start by obtaining your Open Water Diver certification. This foundational course teaches you the basics of scuba diving, including safety procedures, equipment usage, and buoyancy control. It’s essential to be comfortable underwater and confident in your diving skills before venturing into underwater photography. Choose a reputable dive center that demonstrates a commitment to sustainable diving practices and ocean stewardship.

2. Master Buoyancy Control

Consider taking the Advanced Open Water Diver course. This course not only enhances your diving skills but also allows you to choose specific adventure dives that align with your photography interests. Adventure dives like peak performance buoyancy and night diving are particularly relevant for underwater photographers. Fish identification also helps you understand the behavior of marine animals, their habitat, and movement patterns; know more about your subjects to tell more powerful stories. It is so useful and foundational that we will offer you a discount on our course if you have already learned any of the specialities listed here.

Then spend time practicing buoyancy control during your dives. Achieving neutral buoyancy is crucial not only for capturing steady and clear images underwater but also for protecting the delicate reefs.

3. Take the Advanced Underwater Photography Course by Bubbles & Lenses

With Bubbles & Lenses, familiarize yourself with your camera and its settings. Learn about aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. Understand how these settings impact your underwater shots. If you do not have your own camera yet, we can also help you decide on the type of camera to use for your interest and budget.

You will study composition techniques specific to underwater photography, practice focusing techniques, and learn about color correction methods to restore natural colors lost due to water absorption.

Throughout the course, you will take your time observing marine creatures to understand their behavior and characteristics thus enhancing your environmental awareness. Patience is key to capturing unique moments while being respectful of our environment. Diving with us, you are guaranteed extended dive time (up to 100 minutes depending on the conditions, double your standard 45-minute fun dive) to ensure you return with great images.

Finally, sit with us to edit your photos and cut your first underwater visual story. Share it for all to see and join ocean ambassadors around the world to raise awareness on the beauty and sensitivity of our oceans. Consider joining conservation programs such as coral restoration programs, reef surveys, shark conservation, or ocean floor cleanups to help form the stories you wish to tell through your images and spread the word about their critical work.

Remember, underwater photography combines both diving skills and artistic creativity. Enjoy the process, respect marine life, and capture the beauty of the underwater world!
